BoxOfficeQuant created a chart which attempts to answer the question: Are sequels really better or worse than their original movies? See the full chart below.
As expected, most sequels fail to surpass their original film, only a few exceptions.
The chart graphs the scores from Rotten Tomatoes with the originals’ scores on the X-axis, and the sequels’ scores on the Y. Movies that appear on the center line are sequels that scored the exact same rating as the original. Films above the center line are sequels that have surpassed the original, while the movies below the center line are the ones that didn’t live up to the first installment. Also, the bubble size is based on the domestic box office gross.
